I was drinking equal in my tea in the morning, diet coke during the day and koolaid and crystal lite sweetened with nutrasweet, all evening.... nothing touched my lips unless it was aspartame.... anyway I stopped using and I am doing so much better!! I use to develop headaches all the time. My symptoms ranged from minor headaches to migraine headaches and vomiting. I also have memory loss. Once I discovered the cause, 95% of my headaches went away. I read product labels and avoid Aspartame/MSG like the plague. At the time of the above decision, I took 20 units of U in the morning and also the evening in addition to 13 units of R at each mealtime. The bloodsuger was frequently unpredictable. After 3 months on the lack of Nutrasweet, I found that I had to reduce the insulin which I have done gradually over the past month. Now I take 15 units of U twice a day and 10 units of R before each meal. It so happens that I care for a head trauma patient, who is severely damaged. I recently chewed a stick of gum that had aspartame in it and I got an immediate headache. I couldn't figure out why at first why my head was aching so badly. The doctor surmised it was an allergic reaction to aspartame. Focus/ resolution has remained good. The worse part was (and remains) a feeling of the loss of alertness. I find it harder to learn new things (computer programming) and reading to comperhend is really difficult. There was a point in time just before I stopped drinking Diet Coke that I could sit for hours and read the same page and still not know what it said. I remember thinking if I underline or highlight the words the meaning of the thought would become clear. It did not work. After stopping, I lost 35 lbs and started working out and eating low fat food. I have now gained some of it back, but have not drank a diet soda in 5 years. I do not believe I have regained the full functioning of memory. I can now point to other problems on the list and identify with them. I was told I had 'functional Hypoglycemia' and the mood swings (and a list of others) were a result of it. I told the doctor that I was drinking large amounts of Diet Coke and he did not seem to think it was a problem.
