After I recovered from anorexia, I continued drinking diet soda. In the yrs that followed I developed ammenorria (not spelled correctly, I know) --cessation of menstrual periods--My drs attributed this to the anorexia. Yet in the past seven yrs, since my recovery from anorexia, I still have had to deal w/ this problem (no menstrual periods). My dr. tried provera pills and when that didn't work, a provera shot, and when that didn't work 2 proivera shots plus pills...all to no avail. She couldn't figure it out--and I became scared that I had some serious problem that would affect my ability to have children....Remarkably enough, after 1 week without aspartame--and seven yrs later,I discovered my ammenoria was suddenly "cured." Is this ironic timing--or is there a connection? I know what I think... -------------- Date: Mon, 17 Feb 1997 To: xxxxxxx@xxxxx.xxxx.xxx Subject: Re: A few more questions/my story After a lifetime of health, in April of last year, I developed an onset of fatigue, headaches, muscle aches, joint aches, burning in my upper back, neck aches, numbness in my lower legs and feet, nerve pain (legs and lumbar), mental confusion, dizziness and depression. By the end of August, I was in such severe pain I could hardly walk, and the lumbar pain had become so extreme that I couldn't sit in a chair very long. I was taking 18+ ibuprofen daily and was using a heating pad round the clock. I didn't sleep well or on my right side, due to the nerve impulses which had begun shooting through my right leg. The x-rays, MRI (cervical/lumbar), and blood tests all came back "normal." After the EMG and nerve conduction tests, the official diagnosis was "peripheral neuropathy." The neurologist either ignored or minimized the other symptoms of which I complained: debilitating fatigue, headaches, mental confusion, cold hands & feet. I felt totally lost and walked away with no concrete answers. My sister-in-law, who many years ago was diagnosed with fibromyalgia (FMS), kept suggesting I had the symptoms, so I kept researching that angle. I knew I had some of the symptoms of FMS, but some of my symptoms didn't fit - if it was fibromyalgia, then something else had to be going on, too. In December, while researching the net, I came across a list of symptoms which contained not only my complaints to the neurologist, but also, *on the same list,* were other ailments I'd also suffered for 3-5 years, yet never thought to associate with aspartame: cloudy vision, loss of equilibrium, tinnitus, slurring of speech, tingling of the extremities. I was shocked. Here was one list with all the things I'd been suffering. It was a list of symptoms of aspartame poisoning. Reading further, I learned that aspartame poisoning can worsen or mimic MS, FMS, Chronic Fatigue, Alzheimer's and more, because it attacks the nervous system. Now it all made sense to me for the first time. And no wonder I got sick!! I'd been drinking 3+ diet pepsis daily since aspartame was put into them - 13 years at least! My husband also had been consuming aspartame daily for years as well, in Equal, and in such products as yogurt and ice cream; and, unbelievably, for nearly 2 years he'd had a bizarre hip ache and hamstring pull that wouldn't heal, no matter what he tried. Turns out, it was aspartame, too!! The reason we both know this is that on Jan 1. 1997, my husband and I gave up all aspartame-laced products, and within days most of our muscle aches and pains, and my nerve pain, subsided considerably!!! My dizziness, cloudy vision, and "foggy thinking" have improved noticeably, too. It's only been 5 weeks, and my husband feels like a new person. I feel better, too, but I still have the leg numbness, tinnitus, and some dizziness, but since it supposedly takes over 60 days for major improvements, I am hopeful. I will never knowingly consume aspartame again, and I tell everyone I know what happened to me and to quit consuming this poison!! -------------- Subject: Re: aspartame vs. sugar experiment Date: 1997/02/10 Newsgroups: misc.consumers.frugal-Living When Nutrasweet first came on the market 10 years ago, I switched to it from saccharin for my soft drinks (sodas made with sugar taste too "sticky" for me). And, the coughing and asthma that accompanied it stayed. No mucous, just wheezing, coughing and asthma. I have never been given an asthma medication that I liked. I couldn't put more than 5 words together without coughing and talking because an unpleasant exercise. I have avoided most of my allergic causing things i.e. cigarette smoke, animals, dust, mold, mildew, etc. but it stayed and staying. Then I got a stomach flu and could only take liquids for about 4 days. During that time I was drinking Gingerale and it got worse. I was thinking about a hospital visit because I was having so much trouble breathing. My first day back at work, my partner suggested that I stop drinking DIET SODA. That's when I realized that all I have touched for about the past four years in the way of soft drinks is DIET SODAS (root beer, ginger ale, and coke). So I stopped drinking the stuff and within 5 days my breathing had improved immensely. It has now been three weeks and the difference is remarkable. Yes, I still have asthma---but now do not need any medication at all because I am no longer wheezing all the time. It will come back when I get sick with colds. Oh yes, it also comes back when I inadvertently eat something that contains artifical sweeteners. When I drink a diet soda I get the same symptoms as when I have extremely low blood sugar-faint, sweaty, irritable, nauseated. .... -------------- [Interesting] Re: aspartame vs. sugar experiment Date Tue, 04 Feb 1997 20:50:11 +0000 Newsgroups misc.consumers.frugal-living A few months ago, I saw Richard Simmons on "The Tonight Show". Jay mentioned to Richard that he looked thinner than the last time they had seen each other. Richard said that he had quit drinking diet sodas and teas, and just started drinking water. The change resulted in losing 15 pounds. Richard described the water as getting all the "ca-ca" (Spanish for sh*t) out. Obviously even when a drink doesn't have calories, there's stuff in it that isn't doing your body any favors. -------------- ANN: Protein Supplement for Vegetarians Date Sun, 02 Feb 1997 15:22:52 -0500 Newsgroups alt.med.fibromyalgia .... I am still looking for a balanced protein/fat/carbos snack bar without aspartame (makes me ill.) Any suggestions would be appreciated! -------------- AOL/Pain Message Boards/Headaches & Migraines/Headache Triggers Subj: Nutrasweet/Chocolate Date: 97-01-03 12:43:47 EST I'm new to this so excuse me if I'm repeating earlier advice. I'm 36 and have experienced migraines for 10-12 years (I'm thinking I started getting them about the time Nutrasweet was introduced heavily into the marketplace). I get the aura before I experience the migraine (I'm learning this is a relatively uncommon experience for migraine sufferers). Anyway, good news for you women....when I was pregnant and/or breastfeeding, my migraines went down considerably. However, when I weaned my daughter, they came back with a vengence. So I finally decided to cut out chocolate and Nutrasweet...Voila...only 2 migraines in 3 mos!!!!! PLEASE try this...I always thought my migraines were hormone induced (some of them are, I still believe). But now, I'm certain chocolate and/or nutrasweet are my triggers...AVOID THEM. worked for me! -------------- Re: Sugar Substitute (long) Date Tue, 04 Feb 1997 23:29:41 +0000 Newsgroups misc.consumers.frugal-living xxxxxx, thank you for posting that information about the dangers of aspertame. I just sent the info. to everyone I know. My mother has long said that she gets hives using anything with aspertame. I also know some women that suffer from chronic fatigue and I'm going to give them the URL for the aspertame commission. -------------- NeuroWeb http://132.183.145.103/neurowebforum/MultipleSclerosisArticles/ASPARTAME.html ASPARTAME This response submitted by on 9/18/96. I read an article not long ago in this forum from someone who had done some research about the chemical make up of Nutrasweet & how it is altered in hot drinks like coffee. It basically produces a gas similar to methane at a certain temperature. Would you ever put methane into your body? Stay away from it if you can & use real sugar or nutrasweet. My headaches have ceased without it in my diet. -------------- Date: Sat, 21 Dec 1996 18:12:29 -0500 Sender: "PARKINSN: Parkinson's Disease - Information Exchange Network" Subject: Aspartame update Some time ago *someone* on the list asked me to post a report about what--if anything--changes when Peter and I stopped using aspartame (Equal) as a sugar substitute. It has nowbeen several months, and the only thing I can report is something that I'm not sure is related, except that it coincided with going back on sugar for both of us: Peter had had almost continuous swelling of feet and ankles, which is not uncommon and which had now disappeared completely. I had developed a swelling of my left foot only, which the doc said was probably from arthritis, and that too has gone for good. Was the swelling due to Equal, of which we used a lot? Who knows??? In any case, that's the "update" FWIW,for whoever it was who asked and whoever is interested. --------------
