What follows is a 5-part article on toxic carpeting by the Director of Research of the Environmental Access Research Network, Cindy Duehring. The articles appeared in the Journal, Informed Consent during 1993 and 1994. Since Cindy Duehring still retains the copyright to the articles, but she has graciously allowed me to put the article on my Web page as well as to offer it to interested parties. One of my goals is to provide information that will help people restore their health and/or that will keep them from damaging their health. There are obviously many possible causes of health problems. Toxic carpeting is one of the major environmental causes of health problems -- both acute symtpoms, and slow damage (e.g., neurological, immunological and respiratory damage) to the average person. As you will see by reading the article, it is a growing problem and a growing concern amongst researchers and healthcare practitioners. The very serious concerns about long-term exposure to toxic carpeting resulted in U.S. Senate hearings on indoor air quality and carpeting in 1991 and 1993. Hopefully, this series of articles will help protect you and your family now and in the future. This issue is important to persons who do not have carpet for the following reasons: 1. Toxic carpeting can be installed at work, damaging the health of employees or at schools (or daycares) damaging the health of children. 2. Many people will know someone over the next few years (before toxic carpeting is banned) who will unwittingly purchase or plan to purchase toxic carpeting. This is an opportunity to help protect your friends and neighbors from the effects of toxic carpeting by providing them detailed information about health effects as well as resources for less toxic flooring. If you do not have access to the World Wide Web (WWW), please email me and I will be happy to provide you with a copy of the 5-part series plus and update on industry research and points to remember written by me.
